I call Uganda the Vortex. If you’ve felt it then you know, this place holds on like a force of its own. Some of my art inspired from the Pearl of Africa.
People, Light, Blood, Husk
In 2013, I came to Uganda for the first time volunteering with an organization that provided solar lighting for maternal health clinics. “People, Light, Blood and Husk” was a series I made from the travel drawings of that period. Illustrations were transferred on to cloth and painted with a limited color pallet of red, black, white and ochre.
Barkcloth Burn
Barkcloth comes from the Mutuba Tree in Uganda. The bark is stripped, boiled and beaten.
I sat in the sun with a magnifying glass burning these lines. The back of my hands also burned many times, they’re wrinkled from the love of labour of this series.
Bunga Underground Night Series
I am that confident awkward presence in a bar with a marker and a pad of paper.
Come sit with me and draw, you are welcome.
